Mushroom Quiz

| May 26, 2012

Can anyone identify this mushroom? After some pretty hefty rain, I discovered these mushrooms growing in one of my container vegetable gardens.

The Felicia of old would have freaked out, but the new, more mature organic gardener is welcoming the interesting looking visitors. From information I’ve gleaned over the Internet, mushrooms are a sign of healthy soil and are good in the garden.

I’ve also read it’s a sign of too much water in the soil. That will rectify itself when the rain lets up and the water overflow hole in the self-watering container stops draining. In the meanwhile, if anyone can shed some light on what type of mushroom this is, I’d be grateful.

Not sure what this one is as I can’t find our mushroom identification book but it looks like it might be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Parasola_sp_mushroom.jpg.

My super-gardener SIL says it’s an innocuous variety and not to worry. She suggests cultivating the soil and says you could also pluck them out, if you want.

Thanks, Crystal. They’re only growing in the containers with bokashi. The third container that was waiting for its share of bokashi is mushroomless. I’m believing mushrooms are a good thing, so I guess I’ll let them live. I’ll watch and observe.

Wish your SIL lived nearby. I’d pick her brain until she was sick and tired of me. 🙂
